Songs of Summer
Most of the people I know have dismissed Pop radio altogether, to which I say, “fair enough.” However, this summer was enough of a fluke that there were a number of rollicking hits to make cruising on Friday nights and listening to the broadcast from Club Zanzibar more than worth it. Below I’ve listed my top 5 pop hits, and maybe you’ll see why Summer 2007 will be remembered as “the summer of the vocoder.”
This song is pretty good. If you skip through Jay Z at the beginning, which I think the radio version does, it’s quite catchy and it features those long black umbrellas I like so much.
I hate Fergie and that shitty band she came from, and the premise that she’s “still real” like “Jenny on the Block,” but this song has a great chorus and I love Luda’s part in it. Not to mention I like songs that S-P-E-L-L things.
3. Sean Kingston—Beautiful Girls
Dude has a great voice, even if it is vocodered to the max. And the word “suicidal” is part of the chorus, which is unexpected. He’s a chunky too, which is also unexpected. I’m not sure where I’m going with this, but I sincerely like this song.
2. Justin Timberlake—What Goes Around…Comes Around
JT just keeps hittin’ ’em out of the park. First “Sexy Back,” then “My Love,” now this song. N*Sync was enjoyable, but this is dance-able. Really dance-able. That rap section in the middle sucks, but it’s easy to ignore.
1. R. Kelly—I’m a Flirt
This song is so good I can’t even believe it. He gives some real advice about bringing your girl to club. Don’t go to the bathroom or Kells is gonna scoop up your honey! This video is awesome too: featuring the crowning of the King of R&B.
